Balanços do alargamento de 2004 da União Europeia - convergências a Leste, divergências a Sul
Ontem, dia 1 de Maio de 2014, celebrou-se o 10º aniversário da adesão à União Europeia (UE) de 8 países da Europa Central e Oriental (PECO), nomeadamente a Eslováquia, Eslovénia, Estónia, Letónia, Lituânia, Hungria, Polónia e República Checa (em 2004, também Chipre e Malta passaram a integrar a UE). Num breve balanço destes 10 anos de adesão dos PECO, Zsolt Darvas, do “think tank” Bruegel chega a um conjunto de interessantes conclusões: “ Since their accession to the European Union ten years ago, something extraordinary has has been going on in the central European capitals. Measured in purchasing power standards (PPS), Warsaw, Bratislava and Prague now have a higher GDP per capita than Vienna. Budapest is also not far behind Vienna and the other anniversary members' capitals are closing the gap as well, except the Ljubljana region.
